151553344March 18 - London 2012 Paralympic gold medal-winning swimmer Mary Fisher has been named as one of The New Zealand Herald's Future Stars after her impressive debut performance at last summer's Games.

The 20-year-old Fisher, who competes in S11 events, won gold in world record time at London 2012 in the 200 metres individual medley, also taking silver in the 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke, and bronze in the 50m freestyle.

The New Zealand Herald, which has the largest circulation of any newspaper in the country, has recognised the nation's "Future Stars" since 1968, where a panel of esteemed figures in New Zealand sport identify young athletes that they believe will go on to become elite competitors.

This year's panel featured New Zealand Olympic Committee President Mike Stanley and two-time Olympian swimmer Alison Fitch, as well as New Zealand Herald sports editor Chris Allen and sports writer Terry Maddaford.

The six "Future Stars" will receive a NZ$1,500 (£820/$1230/€950) grant to go towards training and will receive their awards at a ceremony next month, as well as a product prize.
