The 22-times Paralympic medallist, the only British female competitor at London 2012 to be made a Dame in the Queen's 2013 New Year's Honours list, will become the latest British sporting champion to have a train named to mark her achievements.

Eleven Javelin trains have already been given names, including that of double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes and four-time Paralympic gold medallist Marc Woods, with a further 12 to be named after the nation's Olympians and Paralympians during this year.

Storey said she was thrilled to have been selected by Southeastern as the first athlete following the Games to be named on the Javelin train. 

"I feel incredibly honoured and am very proud to have been chosen to have my name on the side of a high speed Javelin train," she said.

"The London 2012 Games touched the nation and now for passengers to have a permanent   reminder of the Games and the athletes they cheered on to gold, it is a superb way of keeping that spirit alive.

"A huge thank you to everyone involved in setting this up and I hope to be able to travel on my train many more times in the future."

The train service was praised for its performance throughout the London 2012 Games, transporting more than 2.4 million spectators to and from the Olympic Park in Stratford.


Storey, 35 from Manchester, topped the medal table for the British team with four golds in the C5 women's 3,000 metres individual pursuit, C5 500m time trial, C5 16 kilometres road time trial and C5 64km road race at the London Games, as well as setting a world record in her first event the individual pursuit.

In December last year, she and her fellow cyclist husband Barney, a three-time Paralympic gold medal winner, announced they are expecting their first child, but she has made it clear that she is looking to make a quick comeback to competitive cycling following the birth in June as she bids for more glory at Rio 2016.

"Dame Sarah Storey is a veteran of six Paralympic Games for both swimming and cycling," David Brown, group chief executive of Go-Ahead, the owners of Southeastern said.

"Britain cheered her on last year when she stormed home to add four more gold medals to her magnificent tally, making her one of the most successful Paralympians in history.

"I am delighted that staff at Southeastern have chosen her name to appear on the side of a Javelin train."
