Nine tournaments will take place as part of the celebrations in each of the FIE's founding countries - the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, Italy, France, Hungary, Netherlands, Czech Republic and Norway - beginning with the women's sabre Beazley Trophy, which commences on tomorrow in Surrey, England.

The activities will run alongside a travelling exhibition, commemorating the history of fencing, as well as the role of the FIE in the sport and a Hall of Fame dedicated to those that have made a significant contribution to the sport.

The FIE also plans to make a series of three 26-minute films as part of its centenary celebrations, dedicated to the sport and its history.

FIE President Alisher Usmanov is "convinced that 2013 will be a year of success, accomplishments and the start of a new century in the development of fencing".

"I am proud that fencing is one of only four sports to have featured at every Olympic Games of the modern era," said FIE President Alisher Usmanov.

"Our sport has gone on a great and impressive journey throughout these years.

"However, I believe that now is not the time to rest on our laurels, as we have a great deal of work ahead of us and we must face up to tough challenges.

"I am convinced that 2013, when we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the FIE, will be a year of success, accomplishments and the start of a new century in the development of fencing."

The FIE will be hosting a centennial Congress in Paris on November 29, followed by a centenary gala dinner the day after, also in Paris.
