Niccolo Campriani2 030113January 3 - Niccolo Campriani of Italy and Kim Jang-Mi of South Korea have been named the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) 2012 Shooters of the Year.

The Olympic champions were voted as the leading shooters in the world for 2012 by a panel consisting of members of the Athletes Committee, the Coaches Advisory Board and the international sports press.

The 25-year-old from Florence takes the men's award after a highly succesful year which saw him win Gold in the 50 metre rifle three positions event at the London 2012 Olympics, breaking two Olympic records in the process, as well as winning silver in the 10m air rifle event.

The former mountaineer also won silver at the 2012 European Championships, before taking three gold medals, one silver and one bronze in the ISSF World Cup Series.

"This is the cherry on top of the cake," he said.

"It's great news at the end of my best shooting season."

Campriani secured the title after amassing 108 ranking points in 2012, 20 more than second-placed Sergei Martynov of Belarus.

"I am honoured to be on the podium with such great shooters like Martynov - a true legend - and Jin [Jong-oh] - the best pistol shooter in the world," he said.

" I am the first Italian rifle or pistol shooter to win this award since Roberto Di Donna [who won it twice in 1994 and 1996], and that's a great achievement for me and my team."

Jang-Mi claims the women's award after breaking an Olympic record to win gold in the 25m pistol event at London 2012.

The 20-year-old from Incheon also won the 2012 ISSF World Cup final in Bangkok and showed her versatility as a shooter by winning gold in the 10m air rifle event at the 2012 Asian Championships in Doha.

Jang-Mi gained 83 ranking points in 2012, finishing five points ahead of five-time Olympic medallist Kim Rhode of the United States, who finished second.
