A crowd of 68,275 saw Brazilian side Corinthians beat the European champions Chelsea 1-0 in the final to lift the Cup. 

Yokohama, the second most populous city in Japan, lies on Tokyo Bay, about an hour outside the Japanese capital.

The Club World Cup, which is contested by the world's continental champions, once again showcased the country's organisational expertise, technical excellence, unparalleled safety, first-rate public transportation and passion for international sport, claimed Takeda, the President of Tokyo 2020 and the Japanese Olympic Committee. 

Earlier this year Japan staged the FIFA Women's Under-20 World Cup, along with a number of other top events, including the Archery World Cup final, International Skating Union World Team Trophy and the HSBC Sevens World Series Rugby.


"Tokyo is regularly chosen to host major international competitions, and this year, Tokyo has consistently provided athletes, sports enthusiasts and officials with the highest standards of international event organisation," he said.

"Given the global audience these competitions demand, including the most recent FIFA Club World Cup, top-class facilities and organisation is key in running a smooth operation.

"Our city, demonstrating its world-class credentials in these areas, will take this opportunity to showcase our bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020."

Yokohama's stadium, which was built in 1998, hosted three matches during the 2002 FIFA World Cup, including the final when Brazil beat Germany 2-0. 

It is planned that it would host matches in the Olympic football tournament if Tokyo beat rivals Istanbul and Madrid to be awarded the 2020 Games by the International Olympic Committee at  its Session in Buenos Aires on September 7.
