Glasgow 2014 announce sponsorship with Emirates November 7 2012 2November 7 - Emirates Airline were today unveiled as the latest official sponsor of the 2014 Commonwealth Games during a ceremony attended by Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond at Glasgow Airport. 


The Dubai-based airline becomes an official Games' partner and official airline of the Queen's Baton Relay.

The announcement comes just five weeks after the company paid £5 million ($8 million/€6 million) for the naming rights to the Commonwealth Arena in Glasgow's East End, next to Celtic Park.

The venue includes the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, the Commonwealth Indoor Sports Stadium and three sports halls and will be one of the main hubs during the Games. 

"It is excellent to have such a prestigious sponsor as Emirates Airline on board to help us deliver a fantastic Commonwealth Games in Glasgow," said Salmond.

"This announcement is significant, not just because of what it means for the success of the Games, but also as it demonstrates the excellent relationship Emirates continues to have with Scotland, after the airline announced an expansion in its Glasgow to Dubai service earlier this year."

To mark the announcement of the new deal, the 777-300ER aircraft on this afternoon's flight to and from Glasgow was adorned with the Glasgow 2014 Official Partner logo on both sides.

"For many years Emirates has been at the forefront of sports partnerships in the UK," said Richard Jewsbury, Emirates senior vice-president, commercial operations Europe and Russian Federation.

"Now, we are taking this engagement to a new level, as an Official Games Partner of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and Official Airline of the Queen's Baton Relay.

"These partnerships are particularly significant for Emirates as we currently fly to 23 Commonwealth countries, enabling us to connect athletes and spectators from across the globe to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow through our hub in Dubai."

Emirates joins a portfolio of sponsors which also includes Longines, SSE, Harper Macleod, Search Consultancy, Ernst & Young, Atos, Dell, Toshiba TEC, A.G. Barr and RGS.
