Ralph Ord_25-10-12October 25 - Glasgow 2014 has appointed sporting events specialist Ralph Ord to the position of chief operating officer ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

The position of chief operating officer at Glasgow 2014 has been vacant since September 2011, when former incumbent David Grevemberg was promoted from the role to chief executive.

Grevemberg was promoted to replace John Scott, who resigned as Glasgow 2014 chief executive after he admitted to breaking rules over accepting gifts and hospitality from a potential supplier.

But the role has now been filled by Ord, a County Durham native who joins from London 2012, where he was responsible for the delivery and readiness of broadcast facilities, infrastructure and operations for the Olympic Host Broadcaster.

The appointment makes Ord the second senior director that worked on London 2012 to join Glasgow 2014 following the conclusion of the Olympics and Paralympics after Ty Speer, the London 2012 client services director, was named Glasgow 2014 deputy chief executive last month.

"As the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Coordination Commission highlighted during its visit earlier this month, Glasgow 2014 has the potential to be the best Commonwealth Games ever and I am delighted to be part of what will be a great success story for the city and for Scotland," said Ord, who will officially take up his post at the start of next week on October 29.

"Glasgow 2014 is already demonstrating fantastic momentum and generating tangible excitement and I look forward to being part of a winning team delivering a sporting celebration of which we can all be proud."

Ord has had a 20-year career of delivering global sporting events, including senior roles with the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia and the 2006 Asian Games in Doha.

He has been an operational advisor to Rio 2016's Shadow International Olympic Committee (IOC) Evaluation Commission, as well as the author of the CGF's Technical Manual for Venue Operations – one of the defining guidebooks for Commonwealth Games' Organising Committees.

His role at Glasgow 2014 will include overseeing the management of all Games-time delivery including ensuring key functional areas such sport, venues, security, transport and the Athletes Village are ready on time and on budget.

"I am delighted to welcome Ralph into the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee," said Grevemberg.

"He is a well-respected figure across international Games management and brings with him a wealth of expertise which will play an important part in ensuring Glasgow 2014 delivers an outstanding Commonwealth Games for Glasgow and Scotland."
