US Paralympics, the Paralympic division of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), set up the scheme as a community-based programme that is developed locally to involve youths and adults with physical and visual disabilities in sports and activities, regardless of skill level.

Interest has risen in taking up Paralympic sport in America following the London 2012 Paralympics, where the United States finished sixth on the medal table with 98 medals, 31 of which were gold.

In a statement, US Paralympics said: "The newest Paralympic Sport Clubs are Paralympic Sport Miami Valley, a programme of Miami Valley Association of Disabled Athletes in Centerville, Ohio; Paralympic Sport Central Oregon, a programme of Oregon Adaptive Sports in Bend, Ore; Paralympic Sport Cleveland, a programme of Youth Challenge in Westlake, Ohio; Paralympic Sport Dallas, a programme of Dallas VA Lady Mavericks in Richardson, Texas; Paralympic Sport Fargo-Moorhead, a programme of HOPE Inc in Fargo, ND; Paralympic Sport Maine, a programme of Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine; Paralympic Sport New Mexico, a programme of Global Opportunities Unlimited in Albuquerque, NM; and Paralympic Sport Valley of the Sun, a programme of Rio Salado Rowing Club in Phoenix, Arizona."
