Tom Daley_and_Jack_Laugher_09-10-12October 9 - Tom Daley teamed up in a new partnership with Jack Laugher in the 3-metre synchro event today to bring Britain its second gold at the FINA World Junior Diving Championships in Adelaide, Australia.

The 17-year-old Laugher (pictured top, left) – who had won his third world junior individual title the previous day – and Daley (pictured top, left) put their success down to consistency throughout the competition.

The duo finished top of the pile with a total score of 338.85 for their five-round effort ahead of Russia's Ilia Kuzmin and Maxim Popkov who scored 307.92 and Australia's Matthew Barnard and Darcy Taylor who took bronze with 305.88.

"It was a crazy competition," Daley said.

"I don't usually do springboard and Jack rarely does synchro so we weren't sure how we would get on beforehand.

"We had a slightly easier list than some of our competitors but we executed all the dives well and steadily built a lead throughout the competition.

"It's my first gold medal at a Junior Worlds and it is great to say I am Junior World Champion."

Laugher also had plenty to smile about having won two golds in as many days.

"Wow what an incredible competition, it feels amazing," he said.

"Today was a long day and the competition was quite late but it was good fun to end the day on a high.

"Both Tom and I did really well.

"Tom is a platform specialist so it was unexpected."

The double gold came as a relief to Laugher who was glad to put the memories of the London 2012 Olympics, where he missed out on the 3m springboard semi-finals, behind him.

"It was my aim to come out here and put the Olympics behind me, to show that I am a good diver and that I can come back from a bad experience stronger," Laugher explained.

"On my first dive I just wanted to do well and get myself pumped up for the competition.

"The first went well and so did my second and it went from there.

"It was great I got a 10 for one of my dives in my individual event yesterday which is amazing.

"I've come back strongly and yeah, I'm really chuffed.

"I have got a day off tomorrow so I will train in the morning, then do some homework and get ready for the 1m competition on Thursday."

In winning his individual gold here, Laugher had succeeded where he had failed earlier in the summer, confirming his third title with his final dive in the Group A 3m Springboard as he earned 90.10 points for his forward 2.5 somersaults, 2.5 twists in pike – the same dive he was unable to pull off at this summer's home Games.

Laugher topped 90 points for two of his dives to finish more than 56 points clear of his Chinese rivals on 635.45 and get the British diving team off to a golden start in Australia.

Julian Bellan, junior development manager for British Diving said: "It was an absolutely outstanding performance from Jack after his disappointment at the Olympic Games.

"In London he missed two of his strongest dives but he came back here, took the challenge and performed the same two dives so well that he was in a different class from the rest of the field.

"It showed great character to do that and he is a deserving champion."

Daley, meanwhile, will be in action again on Saturday (October 13) in his preferred event, the 10m platform.
