Esther Vergeer_with_London_2012_gold_Sept_7September 7 - Esther Vergeer won her 470th consecutive singles game here today as she claimed a fourth Paralympic gold medal in the all Dutch women's singles wheelchair tennis final against Aniek van Koot.

Vergeer (pictured above and below) got off to a flying start, subjecting van Koot to a humiliating "donut" 6-0 loss.

Van Koot's first serve during the first set let her down and she continued to be dominated by Vergeer.

With van Koot facing the indignity of losing the match without taking a single game, she finally broke Vergeer at 4-0 down in the second set.

However, Vergeer claimed an easy win in the end, taking the second set 6-3.

When asked after the final if she intends to carry on her unbeaten record or possibly retire, Vergeer was giving nothing away.

"It's an addiction from journalists, are you going to continue the streak, is it something you are worried about?" said Vergeer.

"I know the day I lose will come but I do not know when.

"Whether I can continue or retire and I have not made a decision yet.

"I love the game and so I will continue playing tennis, but for how long I have no clue – I really don't know."

Vergeer has been the world number one in the sport since 1999, winning almost 300 singles and doubles titles combined since then.

The 31-year-old's last defeat was in 2003 to Australia's Daniele di Toro.

There is just one sports person known to have a longer unbeaten record than the brilliant Vergeer – former Pakistani squash player Jahangir Khan who played 555 games without defeat in the 1980s.

Van Koot (pictured below) has played Vergeer five times this year and having taken a set off her in April, was disappointed but happy with her result, insisting that her compatriot could be beaten.

"I am thrilled with a silver medal," she said.

"I set my goal on the second round and never dreamed of the final.

"She [Vergeer] is beatable, that is what keeps me going."

Van Koot and Vergeer meet again tomorrow when van Koot teams up with Jiske Griffioen, who took singles bronze, for the women's doubles final, where they face Vergeer and Marjolein Buis in another all Dutch final.
