Scott Danberg_29_AugustAugust 29 - Five-times Paralympian Scott Danberg has been named as the American flag-bearer for the London 2012 Opening Ceremony and will lead his country's 227-strong team around the Olympic Stadium tonight.

The 50-year-old from Florida (pictured), who will compete in the F40 men's discus, was chosen in a vote by fellow members of Team USA and said he is delighted to have been selected.

"I am absolutely honoured," said Danberg, who made his Paralympic debut in powerlifting at Barcelona in 1992.

"This is my fifth Paralympic Games and for four I have walked behind our nation's flag proudly.

"I was so pleased to be nominated by the United States Paralympic track and field team and to have the confidence shown in me by my captain and the whole US team is amazing."

Danberg, ranked seventh in the world in the F40 men's discus, will harbour high hopes of a medal having won bronze at the 2011 World Championships.

He also won the shot put silver medal at the 2006 World Championships and gold at the 2007 Parapan American Games.

"Congratulations to Scott Danberg on being named the United States flag-bearer for the Opening Ceremony," said US Olympic Committee (USOC) chief executive Scott Blackmun.

"The London 2012 Paralympic Games have special significance as the Paralympic Movement started here in 1948.

"As the Games return to its birthplace, we celebrate the growth of the movement and the extraordinary Americans who represent our country in this event."
