Canada Paralympics_shootingAugust 1 – The Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) has announced their judo, shooting and wheelchair fencing teams set to compete at London 2012.

Christos Trifonidis will represent Canada at his sixth Paralympic Games in shooting, which is due to start August 30 at The Royal Artillery Barracks, and will hope to improve on a fourth place finish at Beijing 2008.

He is joined by Doug Blessin, a former wheelchair rugby player who began his international shooting career in 2010.

London will be his first Games, as it will be for the three judoka selected; Justin Karn, Timothy Rees and Tony Walby, who will compete at London's ExCeL on August 30.

Meanwhile, wheelchair fencing athletes Pierre Mainville and Sylvie Morel will begin their Paralympic Games at ExCeL on September 4.

Mainville was crowned Canada's first world championship medallist in the sport in 2010, and this will be his second Paralympics after participating in Beijing, where he finished ninth in the epée and 15th in sabre.

While Morel will also compete in her second Games, following on from her performance in Sydney 2000, she will target an improvement on the ninth and 11th place results she achieved then in the epée and foil.

The first Canadian athlete to fence in a wheelchair, she will take part in the epée only this summer.

Canada will be taking 150 athletes to the Paralympics, as they target a top eight finish.

"These three sports are all small in numbers, but definitely mighty in their medal potential," said Team Canada Chef de Mission Gaétan Tardif.

"These nominated athletes include both Games veterans and rookies, and I'm very much looking forward to cheering them on in London as they compete with pride for Canada."
