Paralympic Flame_Lighting_Ceremony_18_JulyJuly 19 - Ticket applications have opened for the Paralympic Flame Lighting Ceremony at Stoke Mandeville Stadium on August 28, the birthplace of the Paralympic Games.

It total, four Paralympic Flames will be lit with the first in London on August 24, the second in Belfast on August 25, the third in Edinburgh on August 26 and the fourth in Cardiff on August 27.

The four Flames will then be brought together at the Flame Lighting Ceremony (pictured top) in Stoke Mandeville on August 28 to create the Paralympic Flame because it is the location where Sir Ludwig Guttmann sowed the seeds for the Paralympics back in 1948 when he organised sporting competition for injured patients rehabilitating from World War Two.

The Paralympic Flame will be then carried 87 miles by 580 Torchbearers in a 24-hour relay (pictured below) – presented by BT, Lloyds TSB and Sainsbury's – to the Olympic Stadium for the Opening Ceremony on the evening of August 29.

The Paralympic Flame Lighting Ceremony will begin at 4.30pm GMT on August 28 with a number of exciting performances, presentations and inspirational speeches set to take place in front of 3,000 invited guests.

A small number of people are also being given the chance to attend with each individual able to apply for a maximum two tickets per household online.

The tickets are allocated free of charge and people who are successful with their application will be notified before the event.
