Ellie Simmonds_30-05-12May 30 - Twenty six swimmers nominated to compete for ParalympicsGB at London 2012 have been confirmed by the British Paralympic Association (BPA) to represent the host nation at this summer's Games.

They join 16 swimmers named in April following the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming Championships.

In addition, British Swimming have nominated a further two athletes for selection and they have also been confirmed.

The most significant of the now 44-strong British contingent is Ellie Simmonds (pictured above) – the girl who went to Beijing 2008 aged just 13 and took home two gold medals – and Liz Johnson (pictured below, right), a world, European and Paralympic champion.

Also among the 26 confirmed for London today is Jim Anderson, who will be competing at his sixth Paralympics, and siblings James and Ellis Hollis.

Similarly, Oliver Hynd will be joined at the Games by his brother, Sam (pictured below, left), a Beijing medallist, while James Clegg – brother of Paralympic sprinter Libby – was also selected to compete at London 2012.

ParalympicsGB Chef de Mission Craig Hunter said: "Today's announcement just confirms that ParalympicsGB will have one of the strongest swimming teams in the world at London 2012.

"The competition in Paralympic swimming is increasing with every Games, but this team is one of the strongest we have ever fielded and it has genuine strength in depth across all 44 athletes.

"I have every confidence in the people we have selected and I am excited to see how all these outstanding swimmers perform in just under 100 days' time."

National performance director John Atkinson added: "It is great news that nominated swimmers have today been confirmed as competing for ParalympicsGB at this summer's Paralympic Games.

"Although we were confident that we would get the slots, it is so exciting that they can now celebrate.

"That we can also include an additional two athletes who show really strong potential is the icing on the cake."

Six-time Paralympic champion Sascha Kindred (pictured below) is another significant figure chosen to represent Britain.

Matt Walker, Robert Welbourn and Graham Edmunds, who won gold alongside David Roberts in the 4x100 metres freestyle at both Beijing 2008 and Athens 2004, are all selected, as is Matthew Whorwood, who picked up two bronze medals four years' ago.

Jon Fox, who claimed silver at Beijing 2008, and Anthony Stephens, who took one bronze four years' ago, as well as three bronze and one silver at Athens 2004, will also hope to repeat their medal winning feats.

Other Beijing 2008 medallists competing this summer include Heather Frederiksen, who won one gold, two silver, one bronze; Louise Watkin three bronze, one silver; Natalie Jones two bronze; and Claire Cashmore one bronze.
