The 16-year-old, who is one of Britain’s likeliest goal medal contenders at the Youth Olympics, withdrew from today synchro final at the European Championships, where he was due to partner Max Brick.

Daley has subsequently been ruled out of the individual 10 metre platform final in Hungry, an event in which he is defending champion, and admitted that is unsure of whether he will be okay in time to compete at the Youth Olympics.

He said: "I’m gutted that I can’t do the individual competition and regain the European title.

"I feel so much more guilty when there’s someone else to let down but injuries are going to happen especially when you're growing.

"I just have to deal with it.

"The cause of it was one of my dives, I missed my hand and my arm went behind my head quite quickly.

"I’m now going straight to the Youth Olympics on Monday and hopefully the British Olympic Association (BOA) will help me get back to full fitness before next weekend."

At the Youth Olympic Games, Daley is set to take part in the 3 metre springboard competition on August 22 followed by the 10m platform event.

BOA chairman Colin Moynihan said Daley would be assessed by the medical staff and consult his coach before deciding whether or not to compete.
