The Bahrain Olympic Committee is hosting the regional forum this week ©BOCOfficials are arriving Bahrain ahead of an Olympic Solidarity and Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Regional Forum for West, Central and South Asian National Olympic Committees, which is due to start tomorrow.

The annual event, being held in the Gulf nation for the first time, is being organised by the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) in cooperation with the OCA, and will take place in the BOC headquarters in Manama from tomorrow until Friday (May 9).

On the agenda will be elements of various Olympic Solidarity programmes designed to assist National Olympic Committees throughout the region, as well as a series of meetings with the Organising Committees of three major Games to be held this year.

These consist of the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, from September 19 to October 4, the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, from August 16 to 28, and the Asian Beach Games in Phuket, Thailand, from November 14 to 21.

The first delegation to arrive was from Tajikistan, with groups from Iran and Uzbekistan scheduled to arrive today before the remainder touch down tomorrow.

A total 54 officials from 26 countries are expected to attend in addition to three OCA officials and five representatives from the Olympic Solidarity Committee.

The event is particularly important to Bahrain as the BOC moves to strenghen its ties with the OCA following a meeting in Kuwait City earlier this year in March.

Heading the Organising Committee will be BOC information technology director Nawaf Abdulrahman.

He will be assisted by five standing committees spanning media, accommodation and transportation, public relations and events, administration affairs and logistics and information technology.

The event is the first Olympic Solidary and OCA Forum to be held in over a year, with the last such meeting taking place in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo last March.

It will be followed next week by a similar forum for East and South East Asia beginning on Sunday (May 11) in Myanmar.
