It is the second consecutive bid to stage an IOC Session in the capital Lima, after the 2015 gathering was awarded to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in what was a two-horse race.

The 2017 Session will see the host of the 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games announced.

An American bid from either Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco or Washington D.C, could go up against bids from European cities including the French capital Paris.

Announcing its bid to host the Session, Peruvian Olympic Committee President José Quiñones González, said: "We would be honoured to host the IOC Session.

"This is our second consecutive bid to host the IOC Session, and it would be a privilege to welcome the IOC back to Lima after their last visit in 2013 for the 15th IOC World Conference, Sport for All

"Hosting the IOC Session is significant in continuing our strategy to host international events and we are delighted to be able to present our bid with the support and guidance of the IOC member in Peru."

Lima will host the 2019 Pan American and Parapan Games.

At the end of this year, it will be the location of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, and the city will also be the setting for the 2015 IMF-World Bank annual meeting of central bankers and finance Ministers.

In 2016, Lima will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit for the second time, after 2008

"To welcome the IOC to my hometown of Lima and host my colleagues, would be an enormous boost to sport and the people of the city," said Peruvian Iván Dibós, who has been an IOC member since 1982.

"For Lima to be at the centre of such an event will be a symbol of the future for our young people."

The bid is also being led by Francisco Boza, Minister of Sports and secretary general of the National Olympic Committee.

Boza, who competed in seven Olympic Games, winning a trap shooting silver medal at Los Angeles 1984, said "Lima has successfully hosted a series of international events in recent years.

"We are a warm and very friendly nation and are recognised for our hospitality."

He added: "We are investing significantly in our sporting facilities, developing a high performance centre and continuing to build and strengthen our infrastructure."

The Finnish capital Helsinki is also in consideration for the 2017 IOC session.

It last hosted the gathering in 1952, when it staged the Summer Olympics, and was the setting for the election of Avery Brundage as President of the IOC.

Mexico City withdrew its bid to stage the 2017 gathering in May.

The extraordinary meeting in Monaco in December to discuss the Olympic Agenda 2020 roadmap will officially be the 127th IOC Session.

It will also be where the host of the 2017 Session is announced, with an Evaluation Commission visit to Lima due in September.

Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur will host the 128th Session in 2015, at which the host of the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games will be announced, with the 2016 IOC Session in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the Summer Olympics.
