federation-of-international-lacrosse-logoJuly 29 - Manchester has been awarded the men's 2018 World Lacrosse Championships - the third time it will have hosted the event and the second occasion in eight years.

The quadrennial event, at which as many as 48 countries could compete, will return to the same venue in the English city as 2010 at the Armitage Centre in Fallowfield in the south of the city where the United States beat Canada 12-10 in the 2010 final in front of 5,000 fans.

Those Championships were estimated to have contributed over £5.2 million ($7.9 million/€6.1 million) to the local economy and its success contributed heavily to the decision to return the event to the same venue.

Manchester had also hosted the event in 1994 while nearby Stockport staged them in 1978.

"We are absolutely delighted with the decision to give England Lacrosse hosting rights for the 2018 men's Field World Championship and the opportunity to serve the international community," said David Marsden, co-President of England Lacrosse.

"We hosted the 2010 Championship and will be using the same facilities at the Armitage Centre and accommodation at Manchester University which is within walking distance of fields where the games will be played.

"Following on from the success of the 2010 Championship we are certain that this will give a fantastic boost not only to English Lacrosse but more importantly to the international game."

The Championships have been held every four years since 1974, with American winning all but two gold medals.

Canada won gold in 1978 and 2006.

"We are extremely confident that English Lacrosse, having successfully hosted the 2010 Championship, will again run an event that FIL and the international lacrosse community will be proud of," said Stan Cockerton, President of the Federation of International Lacrosse.

The 2014 men's World Championships are due to be held in Denver.
