Mikaela Shiffrin of America earned a dominant win in Maribor to move to the top of the overall slalom standingsMikaela Shiffrin has powered to the top of the overall International Ski Federation Alpine Skiing World Cup slalom standings with a dominant victory in Maribor, Slovenia.

The American recently crowned world champion led after the first run and held on to her clear advantage over the rest of the field to clock a total time of 1min 39.12secs in tough conditions.

Slovakia's Veronika Velez-Zuzulová, who was eighth after the opening run, came through to take second as she was 1.03 seconds adrift to give her a first podium finish of the season, while Czech World Championship bronze medallist Šárka Strachová was third.

Home athlete and overall Alpine Skiing World Cup leader Tina Maze endured another tough afternoon as she straddled a gate in the second run, which meant she did not finish.

The result sees Shiffrin open up a 30-point lead over Sweden's Frida Hansdotter, who was ninth in Germany, at the top of the slalom rankings.

"I felt like I really I had to attack in the second run," Shiffrin said.

"I feel best after my races when I try to put two really good runs down and in each one I try to be better than in the last.

"But I knew I had a little bit of time so I had to be smart and not go crazy, because the goal is to get the globe this season.

"I think I was a little bit smart in the second run, but I was still pushing it."

In the men's Super-G event, held in the Austrian resort of Saalbach, there was yet more triumph for the host nation as Matthias Mayer claimed his second consecutive win of the weekend.

Mayer finished in a combined time of 1:31.53 to seal his maiden victory in the discipline, while France's Adrien Théaux was second.

Current overall leader Kjetil Jansrud of Norway was third, 0.27 seconds off the winning time, but the result gave him valuable points in both the Super G and World Cup standings.

"I've trained a lot of GS so I had a little bit of an advantage today because of the turny sections of the course," Mayer said.

"I knew I can ski the fast parts, so today was a perfect combination and good run for me.

"It's amazing.

"I live just two and half hours from here.

"It was an unbelievable weekend for me.

"Yesterday, this run was perfect and today, too, so it couldn't be better."

The season continues next weekend with the women's event in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, while the men's competition takes place in Bansko, Bulgaria.
