Jean-Frédéric Chapuis claimed his second consecutive Ski Cross World Cup victory to surge to the top of the overall rankings ©Getty ImagesFrance's Jean-Frédéric Chapuis surged to the top of the overall leaderboard as he claimed his second consecutive International Ski Federation Ski Cross World Cup victory in Tegernsee, Germany.

The Olympic champion continued his excellent recent run of form to seal the win ahead of home favourite Daniel Bohnacker, while World Championships bronze medallist Victor Öhling Norberg of Sweden was third.

The result saw Chapuis overtake Norberg at the top of the overall World Cup standings, and the Frenchman now has 487 points, 10 more than his Swedish rival with three events of the season remaining.

"I'm pretty happy to win here," Chapuis said.

"My goal was to make a good start and keep the lead and I managed to do that, and I'm happy with the result."

Bohnacker's solid performance delighted a raucous home crowd as he clinched his second podium spot of the campaign, but for Norberg third place would have come as a huge disappointment as the season nears its climax.

In the women's event, Swizterland's Fanny Smith recovered from sustaining an injury at last weekend's competition in Åre, Sweden to storm to victory in Germany to keep her hopes of clinching the overall title alive.

Smith, who won bronze at the recent World Championships in Kreischberg, Austria, demonstrated her determination and athleticism to win the event ahead of France's Alizée Baron, who has been somewhat of a revelation this season.

Baron's second place saw her carry on the momentum from Åre, where she claimed her maiden career victory, while current overall leader Anna Holmlund of Sweden was able to hang on to the red bib as she finished third.

Holmlund sits in pole position on the leaderboard with a narrow eight-point lead over Smith, and Baron is third, 87 behind the Swede.

"I feel great," Smith said.

"After Åre it was really tough, because twice I was in front and twice one of the other girls skied over my skis, so voila.

"But here I tried really hard to be as quick as possible and in front so that they couldn't catch me.

"I really like it here [in Tegernsee], because the atmosphere is really good."

The competition continues tomorrow and the results could prove crucial to the destination of the overall titles.
