Meyers Taylor, an Olympic silver medallist at Sochi 2014, alongside Lauryn Williams, who recently announced her retirement from the sport, added to the title to the overall World Cup she had already clinched this season. 

It was Meyers Taylor's third world title, having earned gold in the mixed team competitions at the 2012 and 2013 World Championships in Lake Placid and St.Moritz respectively.

The duo were leading the competition at the halfway stage by 0.39 seconds from home favourites Anja Schneiderheinze and Anna Drzek of Germany and displayed their consistency by lowering the track record on the three of their four runs, to finish with an accumulative time of 3min 46.47sec.

It proved enough to prevent Schneiderheinze and Drzek from overhauling them in the final run, despite the German breaking the track record themselves on their concluding effort, with a time of 56.54sec, leaving the European champions 0.43 seconds behind the Americans.

"Everything came together here," Elana Meyers Taylor said.

"The whole team, the coaches, the support staff, have all worked so hard for this gold medal.

"I'm very happy."

German pairings also finished in third and fourth positions, as Cathleen Martini, competing for the final time at a World Championships after a 15-year career, and Stephanie Schneider took bronze in a time of 3:47.53.

They finished ahead of their counterparts Stefanie Szczurek and Erline Nolte, whose 3:48.04 saw them miss out on the medals.

The final two rounds of the men's two-man event are due to take place tomorrow with defending champions Francesco Friedrich and Thorsten Margis of Germany currently leading from Latvia's World Cup winners Oskars Melbardis and Daumants Dreiskens by 0.46 seconds with two runs remaining.

The mixed team competition is also set to take place tomorrow, with skeleton and four-man competitions scheduled for next week.
