April 6 – Tamas Lorincz was one of two Hungarians to secure European gold on the final day of action in Vantaa ©Getty Images The FILA Senior European Wrestling Championships came to a close in Vantaa today with Hungarians Tamas Lorincz and Peter Bacsi securing gold medals in the Greco-Roman class, while Finland's Rami Hietaniemi came up short on home soil at the Trio Areena.

Defending champion Lorincz, who won silver at London 2012, overcame Azerbaijan's Rasul Chunayev in the 71 kilogram final with a reverse waistlock and body press securing the fall and his third continental win.

An elbow to the jaw saw Ukraine's Armen Vardanyan hand bronze to Yunus Ozel of Turkey, while a pair of takedowns secured bronze for Belarusian Aleksander Dzemyanovich against Chingiz Labazanov of Russia.

Hungary's second victory came in the 80kg category as Bacsi came out on top in a tight battle with former two-time world champion Selcuk Cebi of Turkey, while Ukrainian Aleksander Shyshman and Georgia's Giorgi Tsirekidze took home the bronze medals.

There was disappointment for the home crowd inside the Trio Areena in the 85kg class and it was Ukrainian Zhan Beleniuk who was the party pooper.

The former World Championship bronze medal winner took the lead against Hietaniemi with a bodylock takedown early on and did not allow the Finn to get anywhere close after that, holding on for a narrow 2-1 win.

Russia's five-time European champion Aleksei Mishin went down to a surprise defeat to Austrian Amer Hrustanovic for bronze, while Pole Damian Janikowski had too much for Germany's Jan Fischer to take the other bronze medal.

Mishin's team-mate Alexander Chekhirkin was not to be denied in the 75kg decider as he held off a determined challenge from Armenian Arsen Julfalakyan for a 4-3 win.

Azerbaijan's Elvin Mursaliyev secured bronze with a technical fall win over Hungarian Laszlo Szabo, while two-time World Championship runner-up Mark Madsen of Denmark bagged his first medal at European level by getting the better of Scandinavian rival Robert Rosengren of Sweden.

That brought the Championships to a close and saw Russia emerge as the leading nation with two gold and two bronze ahead of Turkey who claimed one gold, two silver and one bronze, while third placed Azerbaijan came away with two silver and two bronze.
