Ghoncheh Ghavami, arrested for attending an FIVB World League match in Iran, has been released on bail from jail in Tehran ©FacebookA woman jailed for watching an International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World League match in Iran has been released from prison on bail, her family have revealed.

Ghoncheh Ghavami, a 25-year-old woman, was given a year's sentence for "propagating against the ruling system" after she was arrested for attending Iran's match against Italy in Tehran on June 20.

Women are banned from attending volleyball matches in Iran.

The family of the British-Iranian woman said that she has now been freed on bail until her court appeal, following a series of hunger strikes and hundreds of thousands of people signed a petition calling for her release.

A bail fee of $38,000 (£24,000/€31,000) has been paid by Ghavami's family to secure her release.

Ghavami's brother Iman Ghavami, 28, said: "She has been bailed until her court appeal, when she hopes to be vindicated."

Her parents will now be reunited with their daughter, having previously described how they were refused a meeting when she was transferred to a new prison and that they were only allowed to speak to her on the phone.

"Everyone is happy - my parents and my sister," said Iman.

"There are many possibilities, we're not really sure what's going to happen, but we hope for the best outcome.

"For the time being...it's her 26th birthday tomorrow morning, so I think they're going to celebrate for a day or so."

Following international pressure, led by insidethegames, the FIVB announced earlier this month that they would not award any more events to Iran until the country lifted its ban on women attending volleyball matches and Ghavami was freed.

But World League matches would continue to be hosted in the country because those fixtures had already been awarded.
