beach volleyballAugust 9 - Swiss city Biel has beat off competition from eight other cities to be named as the host of the 2016 European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) Beach Championships.

The announcement, which comes just days after the conclusion of the 2013 edition of the event in Klagenfurt, will also see Biel host two Masters Tournaments in 2014 and 2015.

CEV President André Meyer welcomed the news and said the partnership will help the continental body "build on the great results of the past seasons".

"Switzerland is a country that is known for being fond of beach volleyball and this cooperation will be instrumental to the development of beach volleyball in this country as the young generations will be mesmerised by the unique ambiance this sport stands out for," he said.

Swiss Volley President Christoph Stern added: "The city of Biel did submit a very ambitious and convincing project whose long-term goals support and complement our strategy and vision to promote and further establish beach volleyball in our country."

The three-year deal was brokered by promotion company 4sports and Entertainment with the involvement of former beach volleyball player Sascha Heyer – winner of four European medals, including gold in 2001, plus silver from the 2005 World Championships in Berlin.

"As an athlete, beach volleyball has been my life for more than 20 years," Stern said.

"It's an exciting challenge and opportunity for me to be involved in designing and developing this extensive three-year European Championship project.

"The vision is to create a spectacular, unique yet family-friendly and sustainable sports and entertainment event that will attract and inspire athletes and fans alike."
