Jodie_Stimpson_at_Canary_WharfJune 21 - The GE Canary Wharf Triathlon, a new addition to the British Triathlon Super Series this year, will play host to top elite athletes including Liz Blatchford and reigning Super Series Champion Jodie Stimpson (pictured) later this month as the sport comes to the bustling shopping and business district for the first time.

The 2009 and 2010 Super Series Champion, Stimpson will be looking to build on a solid start to her season at the event on June 30 after finishing third at Strathclyde Country Park at the end of May and coming home in 15th place at the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series in Madrid at the beginning of this month.

Matt Sharp, the current leader of this year's Super Series having finished in the top four of each of the first three events, will be joined by fellow UK Sport Lottery funded World Class Development Squad members Adam Bowden, Aaron Harris, and Todd Leckie.

They will be joined on the start line by tri-gold athletes Mark Buckingham and Matt Gunby forming a strong line-up in the men's field.

The women's race will also see the likes of Abbie Thorrington, Hollie Avil and Sky Draper take on the current Super Series top three of Heather Jackson, Lucy Chittenden and Lucy Hall in what promises to be a hugely competitive contest.

It is the first time Canary Wharf has hosted a triathlon event and the high octane Super-Sprint eliminator format will guarantee an exhilarating race for the athletes and spectators alike.

The athletes will compete in a series of fast-paced 30 minute heats, consisting of a 400 metre swim, 10 kilometre bike and 2 kilometre run, before a grand final where world class athletes will compete for the men's and women's titles.

insidethegames last week reported on the launch of the event, which saw Stimpson taking part in an iconic photo shoot at Canary Wharf where she commented on the new location and the reintroduction of the Super-Sprint eliminator format.

"I am very excited about racing in Canary Wharf for the first time, it seems like a fantastic venue and ideal for spectators as it will be a very fast and furious race," she said.

"I had the pleasure of going down and taking a little peak at where the race will take place, it's right in the centre which will make it a great spectacle.

"I am most looking forward to the bike as it's 10 times round a 1k loop - and that speaks for itself in terms of the excitement that it will generate.

"It will be a very fast race indeed, with loads of tactics that need to be played for just getting through the first round to make sure you are in the final, having wasted the least amount of energy possible ready for the final sprint," Stimpson concluded.

A two-part highlights package of the GE Canary Wharf Triathlon will be broadcast on Channel 4 on July 17 and 24 at 7.30am.
