The Swiss won the first set 6-3, with Czech Berdych taking the second set tiebreak to level the match.

Wawrinka edged back in front, winning the third set tiebreak by seven points to three.

In an increasingly tight affair, Wawrinka - the number eight seed - held his nerve in the fourth set tiebreak to win the match.

Wawrinka, who reached the semi-final of the US Open last year in what was the best Grand Slam showing of his career, caused one of the upsets of the Australian Open with a five-set win over Novak Djokovic in the quarter-final.

He will come up against either countryman Roger Federer, or Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who play their highly anticipated semi-final tomorrow.

In the women's draw, China's Li Na will bid to make amends for her defeat in the final of last year's Australian Open, after comfortably winning her semi-final match to face surprise package Dominika Cibulkova.

Li made light work of silencing Canadian teenager Eugenie Bouchard on Rod Laver Arena, winning 6-2, 6-4.

The number four seed was beaten in three sets in the final last year by Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, and by Belgian Kim Clijsters in 2011.

She will face Slovakian number 20 seed Cibulkova, who was inspired against Agnieszka Radwanska in their semi-final.

Cibulkova, who caused an upset in the fourth round by beating Russian Maria Sharapova, dispatched Radwanska 6-1, 6-2.

Radwanska looked in fine form after beating defending champion Victoria Azarenka in their quarter final, but had no answers for her semi-final opponent.

Li - the 2011 French Open champion - and Cibulkova - who before this week had her best Grand Slam at the French Open when she reached the semi-final in 2009 - will go toe-to-toe for the Australian Open crown on Saturday (January 25).
