The Serbian number two seed, who was bidding for his fourth straight Australian Open title, lost to the Swiss 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 9-7.

Their quarter-final clash, played on Rod Laver Arena, lasted for almost four hours.

Number eight seed Wawrinka had only once made it to the last four of a Grand Slam, at the US Open last year.

Elsewhere in the men's draw, Czech Tomas Berdych is through to the semi-finals, after beating Spaniard David Ferrer 6-1, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

In the women's quarter-finals, China's Li Na beat Italy's Flavia Pennetta 6-2, 6-2, while Eugenie Bouchard of Canada caused a surprise by beating Serena Wiliams' conqueror Ana Ivanovic, of Serbia, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.
