The International Table Tennis Federation have announced their inaugural World Table Tennis Day will take place on April 6 ©ITTFThe International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) has announced they will be hosting their inaugural World Table Tennis Day on April 6.

The historic day will see several events take place all over the globe, including a world record attempt for most number of players in a table tennis rally in Brighton, Australia, as well as table tennis parties in London and in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Around 22 national associations from all continents have signed up to the idea and they have all pledged to hold table tennis related activities to mark the occasion.

It is hoped the event will encourage more people to get involved in the sport all over the world, with an emphasis placed on engaging new players to continue to play table tennis in the long term.

"The idea behind this day is to gather Table Tennis enthusiasts, attract people who usually don't play table tennis, promote the love for our sport, and ideally engage new players to the practice in the long term," ITTF President Thomas Weikert said.

"I can't wait for the entire world to play table tennis on 6 April."

The date of World Table Tennis Day coincides with the United Nations and the International Olympic Committee's International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.

Excitement is already building ahead of the day, and ITTF development director Leandro Olvech is urging people to get involved.

"We are very excited about the upcoming first World Table Tennis Day," he said.

"Events can be big or small, the most important thing is to celebrate and share the passion for table tennis, having fun and bringing people together."

The event will take place less than three weeks before the eagerly-anticipated 2015 World Table Tennis Championships, scheduled for April 26 to May 3 in the Chinese city of Suzhou.
