Massimo Fabbrizi secured his place at Rio 2016 after claiming the men's trap event title in Acapulco ©ISSFLondon 2012 silver medallist Massimo Fabbrizi of Italy claimed the men's trap event title at the season-opening International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Acapulco to secure his country's second Olympic Quota spot for Rio 2016.

The 37-year-old World Cup holder beat Australia's two-time Olympic champion Michael Diamond in the gold medal match having managed 12 targets, one more than his opponent.

"I am so happy," said Fabbrizi after joining team-mate Giovanni Pellielo in booking a place at Rio 2016.

"Winning the first World Cup match of the season feels great, and I have achieved my goal.

"Now we have two Quotas for Rio, the maximum number allowed per country in this event.

"That means we can work in preparation of the Games with less stress.

"We're in, now we have to get ready for it."

Despite losing out after dropping four targets, five-time world champion Diamond secured the second Olympic Quota spot awarded on the day by virtue of his silver medal, and will be heading to the seventh Games of his illustrious career.

In the bronze medal match, India's Manavjit Singh Sandhu got the better of Portugal's Joao Azevedo, winning a shoot-off 12-11 after the pair had tied with 12 hits out of 15 targets.

The competition is set to continue with the double trap men's event on Thursday (March 5), following a rest day tomorrow.

The finals of each event will be broadcasted on the ISSF Livestream channel, available here.
