Victories over China and Fiji in their final Pool B matches were enough to see Brazil advance to the next stage, despite having suffered a heavy 40-0 defeat against a dominant Australian team in their opening fixture.

The Australians cruised through their group with three consecutive victories, including 38-7 triumphs over the Chinese and Fijian teams.

Meanwhile, history was made by New Zealand's Portia Woodman as she became the first woman in the competition's history to reach the 50 tries milestone, with five of those coming against France in a 54-0 demolition, although France were able to recover to finish behind New Zealand in Pool A.

After topping their pool, New Zealand will face the United States for the second day in succession after the Americans claimed one of two qualifying positions for the best third placed teams in the competition.

England's women will face the Australians in the quarter-finals after they qualified in third behind Russia and Pool C winners Canada.

The final match of Pool C proved to be a decisive clash as England and Canada chased top spot, but Canada's women overcame England to earn a 24-17 triumph, with Ghislaine Landry and Karen Paquin scoring two tries a piece.

Canada will face Russia for the right to qualify for the semi-finals in Rio after they both qualified from Pool C.

The teams will all be hoping to move up in the overall series rankings for the right to return to Rio next year for the Olympics, with four teams advancing automatically.

New Zealand are the current leaders of World Rugby Women's Sevens having won the Dubai leg and are trailed by Australia, Canada and France respectively.
