The win puts the Commonwealth Games gold medallists second in the overall Series standings behind Fiji, and ahead of Australia and New Zealand who complete the top four in the race to qualify directly for the 2016 Olympic Games with Gold Coast winners Fiji beating New Zealand to third place.

Kwagga Smith was the star of the show in the Sevens Stadium as he matched brilliant attack with sturdy defence to power South Africa to victory.

It was Smith who posted the first points on the board after a strong burst down the right, only for the Aussies to level the score through Pama Fau just before the break.

The second half was where the South Africans really turned up the heat with Philip Snyman diving low beside the post to give the favourites the lead mere seconds into the half.

Seabelo Senatla then put on the after burners to chase down a kick and score to extend South Africa's lead to 21-7, before Senatala's second and a Ruhan Nel five pointer sealed the win.

"We didn't play our best in Australia but this was a fantastic event for us," said South African captain Kyle Brown.

"We've worked hard on our defence all day and this means a lot to all of us.

"We'll enjoy tonight for sure!"

South Africa's path to the final saw them complete a resounding 28-0 victory over defending Series champions New Zealand.

Australia, on the other hand, pulled off a shock 29-24 extra-time win over Gold Coast Sevens champions Fiji.

Argentina came from 12-0 down to defeat Scotland in the final of the Plate and keep their hopes of a top four finish alive.

The Argentine's had secured a tight 21-19 victory over an injury-hit England to book their place in this final, while Scotland brushed aside Wales with a resounding 31-7 win.

There was another turn around in the Bowl final as Samoa turned a 14-0 deficit into a 31-21 victory against France.

Earlier, Samoa scored three tries to two, including a double from Siaosi Asofolau's in their 19-14 semi final win over Portugal, while France defeated the United States 24-15.

In the Shield, Canada defeated Kenya 19-12 courtesy of a Justin Douglas brace to double their points tally for the Series.
