The International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) made the announcement today after the sweltering conditions - with temperatures in the mid 30 degrees Celsius - also caused delays to the women's final earlier this week.

The sport's world governing body has said the points gained at the next three World Cup series events in Egypt, China and Hungary will now count towards qualification to the World Cup Final in Sarasota-Bradenton, United States.

"With the well-being and health of horses the highest priority for both the Union and athletes, we must prematurely end the competition," Klaus Schormann, President of the UIPM, said.

"After much discussion, the consensus has been that we could not and should not continue.

"I would like to thank the athletes for their respect and sportsmanship, it would not have been fair to go ahead.

"We are a sport that strongly promotes animal welfare and the conditions were less than ideal for the horses."

Acapulco is also currently hosting tennis' Mexican Open.
