The EHF awarded the competition to the two countries during its Congress in the Irish capital Dublin today.

Both Denmark and Norway also joined forces to host the event in 2010, with the semi-finals and final in Denmark.

Norway won that competition in their neighbour's back yard, and it will be Norway that hosts the semi-finals and final in 2020.

"We had a great cooperation with Denmark in 2010 and we expect the same for 2020," said Norwegian Handball Federation President Karl-Arne Johannesen

"We really have a good relationship and the Norwegian and Danish cultures are much alike.

"Also for the national teams our cooperation will add significant inspiration for the years to come."

This year's Championship is being held in Hungary and Croatia from December 7 to 21, with Montenegro the defending champions after they beat Norway in the final.

The 2016 edition is due to be be held in Sweden, while France will host Euro 2018.

Danish Handball Federation President Per Bertelsen said: "We have on several occasions shown that we can manage to take international handball tournaments to a higher level for the benefit of participants, spectators, media and the Danish - and the Women's EHF Euro 2020 will be no exception."

Denmark hosted the 2014 men's European Handball Championships in January.
