Britain's Beth Tweddle as been elected as a member of the International Gymnastics Federation Athletes' CommissionOctober 4 - Britain's Beth Tweddle has been elected to serve on the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Athletes' Commission, it has been announced.


The 28-year-old London 2012 bronze medallist will replace American Beijing 2008 Olympic all-around champion Nastia Liukin, who did not run, and represent women's artistic gymnastics on the body. 

She will be joined by Finland's Jani Tanskanen, the 1997 world horizontal bars gold medallist, who regained his place to represent the men.

The 37-year-old, who was first elected in 2009, had been serving as President of the Athletes' Commission, which was founded in 1999, and represented them on the FIG's ruling Executive Committee and Board.

Tweddle and Tanskanen were chosen by competitors competing at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, which are currently taking place in Antwerp.

The FIG Athletes' Commission features six gymnasts, who have been voted in by their peers in their respective disciplines, that contribute to the future of the sport and have voting rights on Technical Committee activities.

Tweddle and Tanskanen will join London 2012 all-around bronze medallist Liubov Charkashyna of Belarus, Azerbaijan's Ayla Ahmadova and Mexican Aldrin Rodríguez García - who look after the rhythmic gymnastics, acrobatics and aerobics respectively, on the Athletes' Commission.

A representative for trampoline will be elected at the Trampoline World Championships, in Sofia next month. 

So far, only one candidate who has put themselves forward is Portugal's Nuno Merino.

The new Commission will then meet all together to elect its President.

The athletes' term lasts until 2016.
