Acrobatics hopes for one day being included on the Olympic programme have been boosted by news that it will appear at the 2015 October 2 - Acrobatics and aerobics are to appear on the programme at the inaugural European Games in Baku in 2015, it has been revealed.

The announcement follows discussions between the European Union of Gymnastics (UEG) President Georges Guelzec and Azad Rahimov, Azerbaijan's Minister for Youth and Sport, as well as Jim Scheer, chief operating officer for Baku 2015.

Both disciplines of the sport are governed by the World Gymnastics Federation (FIG).

Acrobatics is a competitive gymnastic discipline where partnerships of gymnasts work together and perform routines consisting of acrobatic moves, dance and tumbling, set to music.

Its history as a competitive sport dates back to the 1930s, when it was popular in the Soviet Union, and the first World Championships were held in 1974.

Aerobics is the ability to perform continuously complex and high-intensity movement patterns to music - which originates from traditional aerobics - with a high degree of perfectly executed elements of difficulty.

The sport featured in the World Games at Lahti in 1997 and the UEG have staged a biennial European Championships since 1999.

There is also a World Championships, which was held in Sofia last year, when Spain finished top of the medals table with three golds, ahead of Romania.

Acrobatics will consist of mixed pairs while aerobics will feature the women's group.

For acrobatics inclusion in the Games represents a major step forward in their long campaign to be included in the Olympics.

"The inclusion of acrobatics in the first European Olympic Games is a momentous occasion for the discipline," said Laurie Colton, President of the UEG Acrobatics Technical Committee.

"The final reward, following a protracted campaign for inclusion in the Games has been worth the wait.

"The euphoria that has spread through the acrobatic fraternity indicates the passion and pride that exists with this opportunity to compete in such an important event.

"We look forward to contributing to an exciting and skilful competition alongside our colleagues and friends in the sport of gymnastics."

The qualifying competition for aerobics is due to take place at the European Championships in Arques, France, which is due to take place between November 4 and 11, while for acrobatics it is scheduled to take place at next year's World Championships in Publier, which is also in France.
