The event, due to take place from November 27 to 30, will be the penultimate round of the 2014 PGA Tour of Australasia schedule and will have a prize fund of AU$1.25 million (£700,000/$1.17 million/€848,000).

The Australian Golf Club is one of the oldest courses in Australia and hosted the first ever Open tournament in 1904.

Craig Parry's win in 2007 was the 17th time the Australian Open was held at the course, which underwent a redesign under the watchful eye of 18-time major winner Jack Nicklaus last year.

American Nicklaus won three of his six Australian Open titles at the Australian Golf Club in 1975, 1976 and 1978.

Golf Australia chief executive Stephen Pitt was delighted to announce the return of the tournament to the course in Sydney.

"There is such a strong historical link to the Emirates Australian Open at The Australian Golf Club," said Pitt.

"Jack Nicklaus won three of his six Australian Open titles at The Australian and the list of Open champions at this venue includes Greg Norman, David Graham, Kel Nagle, Bob Shearer, Peter Lonard and most recently Craig Parry.

"We're looking forward to huge week of golf in Sydney where even more history will be made."

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy is the defending Australian Open champion after clinching the title by one shot ahead of home favourite Adam Scott at the Royal Sydney Golf Club last December.

Australians Anthony Summers, Matthew Griffin and Dimitrios Papadatos, along with New Zealander Gareth Paddison, have registered wins on this year's PGA Tour of Australasia which gets back underway with the Fiji International in August.

That will be followed by eight more tournaments, including the Australian Open before the Tour finishes with the Australian PGA Championship at the Royal Pines Resort, Gold Coast from December 11 to 14.

The total prize money on offer during this year's Tour is AU$8.4million (£4.7 million/$7.9 million/€5.7 million).
