The unfinished overpass, in the north of the city, caved in on top of a passing commuter bus on the highway below killing two people onboard, while 22 people were injured.

The bridge road was part of the new infrastructure being put in place for the hosting of the World Cup, but work was not finished in time for the start of the tournament last month.

City officials have announced the Fan Fest located in an area of the city known as Expominas will be closed out of respect for those killed in the incident for today's quarter-final matches between Germany and France in Rio de Janeiro and hosts Brazil's clash with Colombia in Fortaleza.

The Fan Fests are located in each of the 12 host cities for the World Cup and allow fans and spectators to watch all the matches from the tournament on giant screens.

However, city officials have insisted there is no threat to next week's World Cup semi-final scheduled to take place in the Estadio Mineirao, which is around 2.5 miles from where they overpass collapsed.

"The City Hall of Belo Horizonte stated that all of the necessary safety and transport provisions required for the staging of the semi-final game of the 2014 FIFA World Cup on July 8 will be delivered," read a statement.

An investigation has been launched involving the city government and the companies involved in the construction.

"Representatives from the municipal secretariat of works and infrastructure, civil defence, Cowan, the company responsible for the construction work, and Consol, the company responsible for the project, were immediately summoned to the site to conduct a study of all the facts related to the accident to produce a thorough report on the causes and define the next steps to be taken," added the statement from Belo Horizonte officials.

The city is also due to host the Great Britain Olympic and Paralympic teams competing at Rio 2016.
