April 3 – FIFA and Sony have announced that three matches from this year's World Cup will be broadcast in 4K resolution ©Getty Images Three matches from this year's FIFA World Cup in Brazil will be broadcast in 4K resolution, also known as Ultra HD, for the first time following an announcement by football's world governing body and its official partner Sony.

One match form the round of 16 on June 28, a quarter-final on July 4 and the final at Rio's Maracanã Stadium on July 13 will be shot and transmitted using the 4K resolution technology.

Viewers with 4K TV sets will be able to watch the matches at home while live coverage will be available in a limited number of cinemas around the world.

The new technology offers more enhanced picture detail for devices with horizontal resolutions of 4,000 pixels and will fully capture the dynamism of each goal, enhance the expressions on players' faces and capture the vivid detail of each stadium, according to Sony.

The Japanese firm will be providing extensive technical support to FIFA, including the development of a 4K live production system, which is four times the definition of HD.

"We are very excited to offer an entirely new viewing experience at the greatest sport event in the world, the FIFA World Cup," said vice-president in charge of FIFA Partnership, Soichi Kawachi.

"By leveraging our cutting-edge 4K technology and our premier products and solutions through our partnership with FIFA, we will deliver a unique and totally compelling entertainment experience, conveying the excitement of the matches in Brazil with the depth and vividness that the ultra-high definition of 4K delivers."

The partnership will see Sony also produce an official 4K film of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, featuring highlights of the matches, while fans will be able to enjoy promotional 4K clips at Sony booths and FIFA Fan Fest events throughout the month-long tournament.

The trailers will also be available at selected Sony showrooms and official Sony Stores around the world.

"FIFA has a proud track record in embracing innovation at our flagship competition, to make sure that football fans around the world receive the very best in match coverage and experience," said FIFA's director of TV, Niclas Ericson.

"We are excited by the prospect of working with Sony to incorporate 4K technology in our production plans.

"4K will propel fans around the globe into a whole new viewing dimension and it marks the dawning of a new era in the broadcasting of sport."

The 2014 FIFA World Cup runs from June 12 to July 13.
