Jerry Bengtson_29_JulyJuly 29 - There was a major shock in the Olympic men's football as Spain, who have dominated the international game in recent years, were sent crashing out after a second successive defeat.

Spain had lost 1-0 to Japan in their opening match, and lost by the same score to Honduras as Jerry Bengtson (pictured top, in white) struck early on at St James' Park in Newcastle.

Allied to victory for Japan over Morocco, also by a single goal at the same venue, it means the Spanish cannot add the Olympic title to their world and European crowns.

Japan have now secured their spot in the last eight with maximum points from their games so far, whilst Honduras need just a point from their game between the two to guarantee a last-eight place.

There was also a major surprise in Group A, as Copa America champions Uruguay were beaten 2-0 by Senegal at Wembley Stadium.

Moussa Konaté grabbed both goals for the Senegalese, who have put themselves in with a great chance of winning Group A.

They face the United Arab Emirates in their final game, and they just need to better Britain's result against Uruguay to top the group.

For Uruguay they need to beat Britain in the final game in the group at Wembley.

Britain defeated the United Arab Emirates 3-1 in their match on Sunday in London thanks to goals from Ryan Giggs, Scott Sinclair and Daniel Sturridge with Rashed Eisa replying.

Giggs' goal before a crowd of 82,239 made him, at 38, the oldest scorer in the 88-year-old history of the Olympic football tournament.

Brazil could be the only one of the pre-tournament favourites in the last eight after they made it through from the group with a 3-1 win over Belarus at Old Trafford in Manchester.

They had gone behind, but Neymar set up Alexandre Pato for the equaliser shortly afterwards.

The Santos star then scored a wonderful free kick to showcase his supreme talent, before setting up another for Oscar late on.

Belarus are still in pole position to make it to the last eight along with Brazil as New Zealand held Egypt to a 1-1 draw.

That means Egypt must beat Belarus in their final game to have a chance of progress, whilst the same goes for New Zealand as they take on Brazil.

In Group B, Mexico beat Gabon 2-0 thanks to two strikes from Giovani dos Santos at the City of Coventry Stadium.

They are now on the verge of qualification, along with South Korea.

The Asian side beat Switzerland 2-1 thanks to a brilliant volley from Bo-Kyung Kim.

Chu-Young Park and Innocent Emeghara had both struck earlier in the second half, and the result means both the South Koreans and Mexico have four points at the top of the group.

Switzerland and Gabon both have a point apiece, and must win their final games to have a chance of qualification – and even then it may not be enough.
