The three-day event, due to be held between October 17 and 19, will incorporate athletes from more than 30 nations, including Italy, Russia, France and South Korea.

The tournament will include both individual and team competitions with the former spread over the first two days and the latter on day three.

Race Imboden and Miles Chamley-Watson, both Olympians at London 2012, will be among the top candidates for podium finishes.

Imboden, ranked 10th in the world, finished third at the 2014 Tokyo Grand Prix and won the silver medal at the Seoul World Cup in May.

Meanwhile, Chamley-Watson made history in 2013 when he became the first man from the United States to win an individual Senior World Championship title in fencing.

There is also local interest with San Francisco natives Gerek Meinhardt and Alexander Massialas in action.

The pair grew up in the city and competed in regional events at the historic Kezar Pavilion during their youth fencing days.

Meinhardt is currently ranked fourth in the world after winning two individual medals on the World Cup circuit last season while Massialas is seventh having won the same number this year.

USA Fencing President Donald K. Anthony Jr. said: "It has been four years since we've had the privilege of bringing a foil World Cup to US soil and we know the city of San Francisco will be a great host to our international delegations."
