Eva Havaris has been announced as the new chief executive of Equine Canada ©Equine CanadaExperienced sports administrator Eva Havaris has been appointed the new chief executive of Equine Canada and will take up her position on June 9, it has been announced.

Havaris has spent the last four years in a similar role at Taekwondo Canada, where she was credited for building strong finances as well as enhancing the sport's reputation both in Canada and internationally.

After studying for a Master of Arts in Sport Management at the University of Western Ontario, she also served as head coach of the University of Toronto women's football team, and as development manager for Rugby Canada.

She was chosen by the Equine Canada Board of Directors due to her alignment with the governing body's strategic plan "One Vision", as well as for her "dynamic vision, exemplary management skills and extensive sport qualifications".

"I am excited to join the Equine Canada team and eager to begin working with, and unifying, the entire Canadian Equine community towards achieving One Vision," said Havaris, following her appointment.

"The goal in the years ahead is to solidify Equine Canada's place as a prominent leader within the Canadian sport system and international equestrian community.

"I am truly honoured to be given this opportunity and wish to thank the entire Executive Recruitment Committee."

Havaris will replace Michael Arbour, who has served as acting chief executive over the past six months, ever since the departure of Jean-Christophe Gandubert, who held the position for just under 10 months.

"On behalf of the Board of Directors and myself, I am very happy to welcome Eva to the Equine Canada family," said Equine Canada President, Al Patterson.

"She comes to us highly respected by her peers, among her fellow national sport organisations and the Canadian Olympic Committee.

"The Executive Recruitment Committee and I knew immediately, upon completion of Eva's interview, that she was the next chief executive for the future of Equine Canada."

One possible area of focus could be preparations for the 2018 World Equestrian Games, where the Canadian towns of Bromont and Montreal are facing United States opposition from Lexington in Kentucky

The two candidates will present their final bids to the International Equestrian Bureau in Lausanne on June 9, the same day as Havaris takes up her post, with the host city chosen the following day.
