Elia Viviani climbed from joint-third place after the first day's action to win the men's omnium ©Getty ImagesItaly's Elia Viviani claimed the men's omnium title on the penultimate day of the European Cycling Union Elite Track European Championships in Guadeloupe.


Viviani was tied for third place with Great Britain's Jon Dibben at the halfway stage but added a further 115 points to his tally from the one kilometre time trial, the flying lap and the points race to finish on 219 points and win the gold medal.

Dibben was 21 points behind in second, while Spain's Unai Elorriaga Zubiaur scored a total of 179 points to complete the podium in the first event to offer Olympic qualifying points for Rio 2016.  

The overnight leader, Artur Ershov of Russia, had a disappointing day and dropped to sixth place in the final standings.

Belgium's Jolien D'Hoore, who holds a four point advantage after the first day of the women's omnium, will be hoping to succeed where Ershov failed to.

The Netherlands' Kirsten Wild and Great Britain's Laura Trott are tied in second place on 108 points after the scratch race, individual pursuit and elimination race.

Elsewhere, there was further success for Great Britain at the Championships as Andy Tennant won the men's individual pursuit and Callum Skinner prevailed in the men's 1km time trial.

Tennant clocked a time of 4min 32.686sec to stave off the challenges of Russia's Alexander Evtushenko and Germany's Kersten Thiele, who finished in second and third place respectively.

Skinner stopped the clock on 1:02.399 ahead of Germany's Joachim Eilers and France's Quentin Lafargue.

France's Gregory Bauge overcame Poland's Damian Zielinski in the men's sprint final.

Russia's Anastasiia Voinova beat Tania Calvobarbero in the women's equivalent.

Germany's Robert Förstemann and Kristina Vogel claimed the men's and women's bronze medals respectively.

Voinova also secured victory in the women's 500 metres time trial with a time of 34.242sec, while The Netherlands' Elis Ligtlee and Germany's Miriam Welte took silver and bronze.  

The final day of action tomorrow comprises of the men's and women's keirin, the men's madison, the women's individual pursuit and the conclusion of the women's omnium.
