February 25 - Sir Bradley Wiggins will compete at Glasgow 2014 ©Getty Images Four-times Olympic gold medallist Sir Bradley Wiggins has confirmed he intends to compete at this year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, just a week after the Tour de France is due to finish.

The six-time world track champion has yet to specify in which event he will compete in Glasgow but it is believed that he may try for his first Commonwealth Games gold in the time trial event, which is due to take place on July 31, just four days after the Tour de France finishes.

The 2012 Tour de France champion has three Commonwealth silver medals from track events in Kuala Lumpur in 1998 and Manchester in 2002, and a Commonwealth gold is the only one missing from his collection.

"I haven't got a gold medal from the Commonwealths so it would be nice to add that on, and it's a couple of days after the Tour [de France] so for the sake of carrying on for a few more days and doing it," Wiggins told Cycling News.

The 33-year-old won gold in the time trial at London 2012, but had nine days of a turnaround between the event and the end of his successful Tour ride.

The time trial race is set to start and finish in Glasgow Green, while the road race is due to take place on August 3.

This year's Tour de France, which starts in Yorkshire, will end in Paris on July 27.

Wiggins is also set to take part in the time trial events at the British Cycling Championships in Monmouthshire at the end of June, while he also has his sights set on the Road World Championships in Ponferrada, Spain, at the end of September.

The news of Wiggins' intention to take part in the Commonwealth Games will come as a welcome boost to Glasgow 2014 organisers, who will still be harbouring hopes that another multi Olympic and world champion, Usain Bolt, will follow the cyclist's lead and declare his intention to compete at the Games.
