The 28-year-old Olympic champion and four-time world gold medallist defeated France's Estelle Mossely in the Romanian capital to continue the winning streak she started when she won her first European gold in Norway in 2005.

"This is another proud moment for our sport," said Tommy Murphy, President of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association.

"Katie is a tremendous athlete and a consistent source of pride.

"Katie Taylor and Clare Grace and the Irish squad in Romania did Ireland proud."

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan secured its first ever medal in the history of the Women's European Boxing Championships, as world silver medallist Elena Vystropova defeated England's Stacey Copeland in the 69kg competition.

A record nine nations claimed gold medals at the Championships, but only Russia was able to achieve two podium topping performances thanks to Anastasia Beliakova, who beat England's Natasha Jonas in the 64kg fight, and Zinaida Dobrynina, who triumphed over Bulgarian Svetlana Staneva in the 57kg weight category.

Steluta Duta made sure there was success for the home squad, with victory over Bulgaria's Sevda Asenova in the 48kg class, while Italian Marzia Davide put on a gold medal winning performance against Poland's Ewelina Wicherska in the 54kg event.

Elsewhere, Mireille Nouchka Fontijn of the Netherlands claimed the 75kg title with victory over German Sarah Scheurich, Ukraine's Liliya Durnyeva topped the 81kg podium after beating Romanian Marilena Radu and Hungary's Maria Kovacs secured the +81kg after defeating Italian Flavia Severin.

Finally, Bulgaria's Stoyka Petrova took the 51kg gold by walkover after Russian Sayana Sagatayeva could not step into the ring due to an injury.
