Particular focus was on the ten elite male weight categories as the event served as a qualifier the 2013 International Boxing Association (AIBA) men's World Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in October.

Leroy Davila was the first to book a spot at the Championships as he claimed victory in the light flyweight with victory over Leopoldo Martinez while Malik Jackson took the title at flyweight win a narrow win over Shawn Simpson.

Eduardo Martinez secured the win at bantamweight with a hard-fought victory over Stephen Fulton Jr. while Kenneth Sims took victory at lightweight, Jose Alday at light welterweight and Jamontay Clark at welterweight.

There was a win for LaShawn Rodriguez at middleweight, Geremias Torres at light heavyweight, Michael Hilton at heavyweight and finally Cam F. Awesome (pictured top right) at super heavyweight.

The event saw the elite men fight without headguards due to the recent change in the rules from AIBA, which means headguards are no longer used in elite men's competition.

Meanwhile the elite women's event saw action nine weight categories, including the three Olympic weight categories of flyweight, lightweight and middleweight.

At flyweight, London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Marlen Esparza secured victory over Virginia Fuchs to take her seventh USA Boxing National Championships title and continue her unbeaten run in the competition.

The women's lightweight event saw London 2012 Olympian Queen Underwood narrowly defeat Tiara Brown in a close fight to claim her sixth USA Boxing National Championship title while the middleweight division saw Franchon Crews comfortably defeat Raquel Miller.
