Qatar Olympic Committee secretary general Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani with FIBA President Horacio Muratore and members of the winning team ©QOCQatari officials have hailed the growth of basketball in the nation following the FIBA 3x3 All Stars in Doha, won by Serbian outfit Team Novi Sad.

The All Stars brings together the number one team in Europe, the Americas, the host country and the rest of the world, together with the number one under 18 team and the winners of the FIBA 3x3 World Tour, all competing for a prize fund of $120,000 ($76,000/€96,000).

The Final on Katara Beach pitted Team Novi Sad against Doha, with the Serbian side winning 20-12 thanks to eight points from Marko Savic and seven from Dejan Majstorovic, considered the number one 3x3 player in the world.

Mohammed "Big Mo" Seleem Abdulla scored five points in a losing effort for Doha, with the Serbian team making amends for their defeat in the 2014 3x3 World Championships in Moscow against the same opponents.

Team Novi Sad's superb calendar year also included victory on the FIBA 3x3 World Tour in Tokyo and Sendai in October.

Qatar Basketball Federation President Sheikh Saoud Al-Thani, also the secretary general of the Qatar Olympic Committee, joined FIBA head Horacio Muratore in handing out the winning cheque to Team Novi Sad.

Following the recent news that Qatar is among nations bidding to host the Basketball World Cups in 2019 and 2023, Sheikh Saoud spoke afterwards about the growing popularity of the sport.

This comes after Qatar's men also won 3x3 gold at the Asian Beach Games in Phuket last month with a thrilling victory over India in the final.

"Qatar is a nation passionate about basketball and we are extremely honoured and proud to have hosted this event for the second time," he said.

"This came as a result of the relationship we have with FIBA and the belief we have that this discipline is a big instrument to promote and develop the game.

"3x3 basketball helps to bring the sport to the people by hosting it in iconic settings with a festival style atmosphere, engaging new fans with the excitement of basketball."
