FIBA has hailed the digital success of this year's Basketball World Cup in Spain ©AFP/Getty ImagesThe International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has hailed the success of the World Cup in Spain, revealing that the posts on its Facebook page topped more than five million "likes", while more than four million tweets were sent during the 16-day tournament.

The official website of the tournament had 33 million visits and 90 million page views claims FIBA, while it says it has doubled the amount of subscribers to its YouTube channel to more than 126,000 and had more than 30 million views during the event which ran from August 30 to September 14.

"Spain 2014 was a sensational event for FIBA and for YouTube," said global head of sports at YouTube, Claude Ruibal.

"The FIBA digital team created tons of audience engagement by posting lots of high quality clips and highlights that helped fans get a broader and deeper connection with the game."

More than 4.3 million tweets about the FIBA Basketball World Cup were sent during the tournament, with 866,000 of them using the official hashtag #Spain2014.

In addition, FIBA teamed up with Twitter to create the functionality @FIBA Scores which allowed users to get live scores from every game throughout the tournament and find out in real time how teams performing.

This generated 50,000 tweets and 10,000 re-tweets, according to FIBA.

Posts on FIBA's Facebook page reached 189 million people, while the FIBA Game Centre App was downloaded more than 250,000, times generating 1.4 million visits and 8.5 million page views.

"The accomplishments and milestones achieved during the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup prove that we have established a very strong presence on digital platforms," said FIBA secretary general Patrick Baumann.

"Moving forward, FIBA will continue to bring our events closer to our fans using innovative digital tools.

"Basketball is a young sport with youth fans and we always have to keep in mind having the most efficient way possible to reach our audience across the globe."

The United States defeated hosts Serbia 129-92 in the final of this year's Basketball World Cup last Sunday (September 14) in Madrid to become the first repeat world champions since Yugoslavia in 2002.

France overcame Lithuania to take the bronze medal.
