Raulzinho Neto led Brazil with 21 points at the Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid, while Marquinhos Vieira added 13, and Leandro Barbosa and Tiago Splitter each finished with 10.

Brazil, also beaten by Argentina at the London 2012 Olympics, ensured the exit of their challengers, despite 18 points from Pablo Prigioni, 11 from Facundo Campazzo and nine from Luis Scola.

Argentina were the first to pull away as Prigioni hit two three-pointers in opening a 21-13 first quarter lead.

Brazil got close again and despite Argentina twice pushing it to seven points - 27-20 and 34-27 - the lead was 36-33 for the Brazilians at the break.

They then used a 15-3 run to stretch their advantage to 48-39 in the third quarter and a three-pointer by Vieira made it 57-47 before Argentina trailed 57-49 after three quarters.

Brazil were keen to retain the advantage and stopped Argentina from getting closer the rest of the game as they scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter.

"We are definitely very happy about it [defeating Argentina]," Barbosa said.

"It was the reason that we were invited to this tournament and we did our job.

"We're happy, but we have to keep going.

"The team feels really great.

"We're together right now as a team.

"Hopefully we go to the final.

"This is historic for our country.

"So we want to do something special for our country and I think this is about time."
