Chinese sportswear company Li-Ning have extended their relationship with the Badminton World Federation by sponsoring this year's World Championships ©Li-Ning Chinese sports company Li-Ning are to sponsor this year's Badminton World Championships in Copenhagen, it was announced today.


It extends further the relationship between the company, founded by Li-Ning, a former gymnast who won a record Olympic medals at Los Angeles 1984, including three gold, and the Badminton World Federation (BWF). 

Li-Ning already has a four-year sponsorship deal for BWF major events, which was signed last year and is due to run until 2016 and which includes the provision of them to provide shuttlecocks and court mats.

In addition to that, Li-Ning has title-sponsored a number of badminton's premier tournaments, including the recent BWF Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in New Delhi.

Li-Ning, founded in 1990, also sponsors many of the top stars in badminton, including double Olympic gold medallist and five-time world champion Lin Dan.

"Super Dan" will not be adding to his reputation as the world's greatest ever badminton player by winning a sixth title in Copenhagen, though, when this year's World Championships are held at the Ballerup Super Arena between August 25 and 31 because he has not qualified for the tournament. 

But, such is the strength of China's squad, players from such country will still be expected to dominate. 

"BWF is pleased to welcome our corporate partners, Li-Ning, as title sponsor for another prestigious tournament which will feature the top names in badminton vying for the honour of being world champions," said BWF secretary general Thomas Lund.

The draw ceremony for the Li-Ning BWF World Championships is due to be held on August 11 in Kuala Lumpur
