The BWF has announced that a new instant review system will be introduced at the BWF Superseries Finals in Kuala LumpurNovember 8 - Instant reviews will be introduced for the first time by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) at the World Superseries Finals in Kuala Lumpur, it was announced today.

Competitors playing at Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium's television court will have the opportunity to test out the BWF's new line call technology, conducted via a camera-based system, when the tournament gets underway on December 11.

This new technology will give singles players and doubles pairs the chance to challenge line calls or umpire over-rules of line calls with each player, or pair, given two challenges throughout a match.

If an original line call, after review, is deemed correct then the player or pair will lose one of their challenges.

If two incorrect challenges are made then the player or pair will have no more challenges for the duration of the match.

However, if the player or pair challenge successfully then they will not lose a challenge.

Thomas Lund, the BWF secretary, predicted the new system, postponed from earlier in the year, will bring a new level of excitement to the sport.

"We know players have been eagerly awaiting the introduction of instant reviews and we are pleased to unveil one of the options and to see how it works," he said.

"We have done lots of testing during this year's OSIM BWF World Superseries to finalise how this system works and we are confident it will add to the drama and excitement of the Superseries Finals - both for players and fans.

"The BWF looks forward to feedback from the players and obviously, if everything goes well, the plan would be to implement instant reviews as soon as possible."

If a player wishes to challenge a call made by a line judge or the umpire then they must call "challenge" and sign their request by raising their arm immediately after the shuttle has hit the ground and the call is made.

The BWF Athlete's Commission has applauded the news of the introduction of the new system, highlighting the importance of player involvement in the process.

"The Athletes' Commission is pleased that players will have an opportunity to test the proposed technology for instant reviews at the upcoming Superseries Finals," said Emma Mason, chair of the BWF Athletes' Commission.

"The players' satisfaction with the technology will be a key factor in its successful introduction to badminton.

"Therefore, the Athletes' Commission welcomes BWF's continuing efforts to listen to the players' feedback on the system,"

A description of the review procedure explained that the system "comprises ultra slow-motion cameras down the court lines which are sending images to a control position near the referee."

"On a signal from the umpire, the operator will display the images to the referee.

"He/she will then decide to uphold the line judges'/umpire's decision or overturn it".

The BWF Superseries Finals is the season ending badminton competition and is due to be held from December 11 until 15 at Kuala Lumpur's Badminton Stadium.
